London Bridge crosses the Thames between the City and Southwark on a site that has carried a bridge since Roman times, making it the oldest river crossing in the capital. The famous medieval version was crowded with houses and shops and displayed the severed heads of traitors on its gatehouse. A stone bridge of the 1830s was sold to an American buyer and re-erected in Arizona, while the present functional span opened in 1973. Its long history and nursery-rhyme fame keep it in popular memory.
