St Dunstan-in-the-East is a ruined City church transformed into a public garden, offering one of the most atmospheric hidden corners of London. Originally medieval, it was patched after the Great Fire with a steeple by Christopher Wren, then largely destroyed in the Blitz of 1941. Rather than rebuild, the authorities planted the shell as a garden, and climbing plants now wreathe the surviving Gothic tower and empty window tracery. Fountains and benches fill the roofless nave, drawing office workers and photographers.
