This small park near St Paul's, laid out on former churchyards and once popular with workers from the nearby General Post Office, is best known for a moving Victorian memorial. Beneath a wooden loggia, a wall of ceramic tiles created by the artist George Frederic Watts commemorates ordinary people who died saving the lives of others, each plaque recording a name and act of self-sacrifice. The Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice has drawn renewed attention through film and remains a quietly affecting corner of the City.
