Rubber changed Southeast Asia, and the experiments that made plantation rubber viable were run here from 1875 — one chapter in the story of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, founded in 1859 as a British tropical colonial garden and grown into a world-class scientific institution. Historic buildings, gates and plantings survive amid living collections devoted to research, conservation and education. In 2015 it became Singapore's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
