Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall

A villa tied to a revolution. The Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, historically known as Wan Qing Yuan, is a colonial-era villa in the Balestier area of Singapore that served as the Southeast Asian headquarters of Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary movement. From this house, the Singapore branch of the Tongmenghui coordinated fundraising and organising among overseas Chinese communities in support of the uprisings that led to the fall of China's imperial dynasty.

An elegant late-colonial house. The building is a two-storey villa in a restrained colonial style, with wide verandahs, louvred windows and a garden setting, built in the late nineteenth century and later donated for public use. Gazetted as a national monument, it has been restored and today functions as a museum dedicated to Sun Yat-sen and the 1911 Xinhai Revolution, and to the role Singapore's Chinese community played in it.

Exhibits and meaning. Galleries trace Sun Yat-sen's visits to Singapore, the activities of local reformers and revolutionaries, and the broader story of the Chinese diaspora in the region. Artefacts, documents, photographs and multimedia displays explain how a modest suburban house on the equator became entangled with the political transformation of a distant homeland. Bronze statues and a memorial garden stand in the grounds, and the villa's verandahs and shuttered rooms have been furnished to evoke the era when revolutionaries met here in secret.

Visiting. The hall is a short distance from Toa Payoh and Novena MRT stations, in a quiet residential and light-industrial district north of the city centre. An admission fee applies, with concessions, and the site is accessible on the ground level. Allow around an hour. It pairs well with the nearby Balestier heritage trail, whose old shophouses, temples and eateries reflect the same period of Singapore's history.
