San Marino Historic Centre and Mount Titano

Perched on the triple-towered summit of Mount Titano, San Marino has governed itself as a free republic since the Middle Ages — a continuity of independence that UNESCO recognised by inscribing the historic centre and mountain in 2008. Within 55 hectares stand medieval walls, gates and fortification towers, convents of the 14th and 16th centuries, the Palazzo Pubblico and a 19th-century neoclassical basilica, all still serving a living capital. Its hilltop position spared it industrial-era rebuilding.
