The main civic square of the capital, laid out on a terrace of Mount Titano directly in front of the government palace, the Palazzo Pubblico. At its centre stands the white marble Statue of Liberty, a 19th-century gift to the republic symbolising its long freedom. The balustraded edge of the square opens onto a broad panorama across the plains toward the distant Adriatic coast. A ceremonial changing of the guard is performed here in summer, drawing visitors to the heart of the historic centre.
