The oldest surviving church in the republic, founded by Franciscans in the 14th century and set beside one of the main gates into the walled town. Its stone facade and adjoining convent enclose a museum and picture gallery holding frescoes, altarpieces and sacred works spanning several centuries. The building has been altered over time but retains medieval elements within. Positioned near the entrance to the historic centre, it is often the first monument travellers encounter on entering the old town.
