Filial duty built a fortress. When King Jeongjo transferred the tomb of his father, Prince Sado, to Suwon at the close of the 18th century, he wrapped the city in nearly 6 km of massive walls designed to state-of-the-art principles drawing on both Eastern and Western military science. Four gates, bastions and artillery towers still punctuate the circuit. Hwaseong Fortress joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997; walk the full loop for views over Suwon.
