A temporary royal palace set within the walls of the fortress city of Suwon, built in the late 18th century as a residence for the king during visits to his father's tomb. The largest of the Joseon dynasty's detached palaces, it hosted grand ceremonies, including a famous royal banquet for the queen mother's sixtieth birthday. Largely demolished under colonial rule, it has been extensively reconstructed, and its halls now host reenactments and cultural performances beside the ramparts.
