The southern gate of the great 18th-century fortress wall encircling Suwon, one of four main gateways in the fortification commissioned by King Jeongjo. Completed in the 1790s, its two-story wooden pavilion sits atop an arched stone base and is wrapped by a curved defensive barbican, and it survives as one of the finest examples of late Joseon military architecture. Now marooned on a traffic roundabout at the edge of the old city's market district, it anchors the walking route along the surviving stretches of the fortress wall.
