Rather than flatten the terrain, the builders of Changdeokgung followed it. Ordered by King Taejong in the early 15th century and realised by a dedicated Bureau of Palace Construction, the palace scatters halls and residences through gardens fitted to the natural contours of a 58-hectare site — Far Eastern palace design at its most graceful, crowned by the famous Secret Garden. UNESCO inscribed the complex in 1997.
