Monastery of the Hieronymites and Tower of Belém in Lisbon

Portugal's age of discovery is written in stone at Belém. The Monastery of the Hieronymites, begun in 1502 at the mouth of Lisbon's harbour, is Manueline art at full sail — ropes, spheres and sea motifs carved through its cloister — while the nearby Tower of Belém, raised in memory of Vasco da Gama's voyage, watched the caravels depart. UNESCO inscribed the pair in 1983; the pastéis de Belém bakery is the traditional finish.
