Built between 1516 and 1521 to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbour, the Torre de Belém is an outstanding example of the Manueline architectural style, combining Gothic forms with maritime motifs, coral decorations, and rhinoceros gargoyles. It stands on a bastion at the northern shore of the Tagus estuary in the Belém district. Morning light from the river illuminates its western facade most effectively for photography.
