Set in the Belém district, this museum holds one of the world's finest collections of ceremonial carriages, gathered largely from the Portuguese royal household. The galleries display gilded state coaches, sedan chairs and berlins from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, several encrusted with baroque carving and heavy gold leaf. The most extravagant were built in Rome for an embassy to the Pope. A modern pavilion opened in 2015 houses the largest pieces, while a former royal riding hall shows a smaller selection.
