This neoclassical royal palace on the heights of Ajuda served as the official residence of Portugal's monarchs through much of the nineteenth century, though it was never fully completed. Its state rooms preserve lavish period interiors filled with tapestries, porcelain, chandeliers and painted ceilings, giving an unusually intact picture of court life. A modern wing added in recent years houses the royal treasury, displaying the crown jewels and a dazzling collection of regalia once used on state occasions.
