Warsaw's Old Town is an act of defiance. After Nazi troops levelled more than 85% of the historic centre following the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, the city's people rebuilt it in a five-year campaign so exacting that churches, palaces and the market square read today as an unbroken sweep of history from the 13th to the 20th century. UNESCO inscribed this unparalleled reconstruction in 1980 — a listing honouring rebirth as much as bricks.
