St John's Archcathedral is the oldest church in Warsaw's Old Town and the coronation and burial site of several Polish monarchs. Originally built in the fourteenth century, it was almost entirely destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt afterward in a Gothic style, part of the meticulous reconstruction that earned the district UNESCO recognition. The crypt holds the tombs of notable Poles, including writers and statesmen. Fragments of a German tracked mine that damaged the church during the 1944 uprising are preserved as a reminder.
