This small, poignant bronze statue near the walls of Warsaw's Old Town depicts a child soldier wearing an oversized helmet and holding a submachine gun. It commemorates the young couriers and fighters who took part in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against German occupation, many of them children. Unveiled in 1983 and based on a design conceived years earlier, the figure has become a moving symbol of lost innocence and wartime sacrifice. Visitors often leave flowers and candles at its base, and scouts stand guard at anniversaries of the uprising.
