Two cities occupy one grid in Cuzco. The Inca capital, reshaped under the ruler Pachacutec into a ceremonial and administrative centre, survives in the megalithic walls that line its lanes; after the 16th-century conquest, the Spanish kept the layout and simply raised Baroque churches and palaces on Inca stonework. High in the Peruvian Andes, the former navel of the Inca world was inscribed by UNESCO in 1983.
