Set in the colonial house once occupied by the chronicler Garcilaso de la Vega, this regional museum in Cusco traces the area's history from pre-Inca cultures through the Inca empire, the conquest and the colonial and republican eras. Displays include ceramics, textiles, mummies, weapons and colonial paintings arranged around a central patio. The mansion, tied to the mestizo writer who chronicled Inca history, adds literary weight. The galleries survey the many layers of civilization that met in the old capital.
