Aflaj Irrigation Systems of Oman

Water in Oman obeys gravity and community in equal measure. The falaj channels — five inscribed systems standing for some 3,000 still flowing nationwide — lead water from springs and underground sources to fields and homes, shared out under communal rules once timed by the stars. Irrigation here may go back to AD 500, with traces as old as 2500 BC, and defensive watchtowers still guard the flow. UNESCO listed the Aflaj Irrigation Systems in 2006.
