The 'Green Mountain' plateau of the central Hajar range sits at elevations above 2,000 metres, sustaining a cooler, damper microclimate that supports rose cultivation, pomegranates, peaches, and terraced agriculture unlike anything else in Arabia. The plateau villages of Al Ayn and Ash Shuraija cling to cliff edges above terraced gardens, and the surrounding wadis are cut into ancient rock strata. Rosewater production during the spring flowering season is a distinctive local industry with centuries of tradition.
