Dominating the historic trading town of Nizwa at the foot of the Hajar Mountains, this seventeenth-century fort is distinguished by its massive circular tower — one of the largest in Arabia — rising 35 metres above a maze of interconnected defensive structures and storage chambers. Nizwa served as Oman's capital for several centuries and its fort-souk complex remains a major centre for Omani silver craftsmanship, pottery, and traditional khanjars. The Friday goat and cattle market held below the fort walls is one of the most authentic in Oman.
