Te Wahipounamu – South West New Zealand

Glaciers sculpted the entire south-west corner of New Zealand into Te Wahipounamu: fjords, sheer coastal cliffs, waterfall-fed lakes and valleys. Two-thirds of the area is clothed in southern beech and podocarp forest, with some trees more than 800 years old, and its wildlife includes the kea — the world's only alpine parrot — and the endangered flightless takahe. UNESCO inscribed the region, which takes in Fiordland, in 1990.
