Three times longer and ten times larger in volume than the more visited Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound is an arms-length wilderness fiord accessible only by boat after crossing Lake Manapouri and a mountain pass by bus. Resident pods of bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, Fiordland crested penguins, and frequent waterfalls characterise the experience. The Sound's remoteness means visitor numbers remain far lower than Milford.
