Charity built one of Guadalajara's greatest monuments. The Hospicio Cabañas opened in the early 19th century as a refuge for orphans, the elderly and the infirm, its calm courtyards and low, generous spaces designed around the people it served. A century later José Clemente Orozco covered its chapel with murals now ranked among the summits of Mexican art. UNESCO inscribed the complex on the World Heritage List in 1997.
