Few cities pile up history as densely as Naples. Greek settlers founded Neapolis in 470 BC, and every ruler since — Roman, Norman, Angevin, Aragonese, Bourbon — left layers in its teeming streets, from the Gothic cloister of Santa Chiara to the towered bulk of Castel Nuovo. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre in 1995, one of Europe's largest, recognising a place where twenty-five centuries of Mediterranean urban life remain crowded into daily use.
