The second-highest peak on Madeira rises in a jagged wall of basalt spires between Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro. Hikers cross its flanks on the vertiginous ridge trail, cutting through tunnels blasted into the rock as clouds boil up from the valleys below.
