Pico Ruivo is the highest point on Madeira at 1,862 metres, reachable by trail from Achada do Teixeira to the north or via the challenging ridge walk from Pico do Arieiro to the south. The summit shelter provides basic refuge facilities, and the views from the peak extend across the full width of the island and out over the Atlantic. The name — meaning 'red peak' — reflects the reddish volcanic soil exposed on the upper slopes where vegetation thins.
