Early Christian Necropolis of Pécs (Sopianae)

Beneath the streets of Pécs lie the painted tombs of Roman Sopianae. In the 4th century the town's Christians created a remarkable cemetery of underground burial chambers topped by memorial chapels, their walls covered with murals of Christian scenes of exceptional quality — a rare double achievement of architecture and art from Christianity's early centuries. The necropolis was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2000.
