Széchenyi Square is the sloping central square of Pécs, crowned at its top by a former Ottoman mosque converted into a Catholic church, its green dome and mihrab still visible as a reminder of Turkish rule. A Trinity column and an equestrian statue of the medieval general János Hunyadi stand on the paving, along with a decorative Zsolnay fountain in the local iridescent ceramic. Cafés and civic buildings line the descending square, which forms the focus of the town's Mediterranean-flavoured old centre.
