Few capitals stage themselves as grandly as Budapest along the Danube. The World Heritage property inscribed by UNESCO in 1987 takes in the river panorama and the Buda Castle Quarter — with remains reaching from the Roman town of Aquincum to Buda's Gothic castle — and later grew to include Andrássy Avenue, layers that trace the great chapters of Hungarian history through one of the world's finest urban landscapes.
