Liberty Bridge is the shortest and most ornate of Budapest's central Danube crossings, opened in 1896 for the millennial celebrations and originally named for Emperor Franz Joseph. Painted green, its Art Nouveau ironwork is crowned at each mast by bronze figures of the mythical Turul bird. Linking the Central Market Hall on the Pest side with the Gellert Baths on the Buda bank, it is a favourite among pedestrians. During summer the bridge is occasionally closed to traffic and taken over by residents who gather to picnic on its span.
