The Citadella is a fortress atop Gellert Hill in Budapest, built by the Habsburg authorities in 1854 to command the city after the suppressed revolution of 1848. Its low stone ramparts wrap around the summit, providing sweeping views over the Danube and both halves of the capital. Long a symbol of foreign control, it later became a lookout and memorial site associated with the adjacent Liberty Statue. The hill on which it stands is named for Saint Gellert, an early bishop said to have been martyred on its slopes.
