Vaci Street is Budapest's best-known pedestrian shopping street, running through the Pest side from Vorosmarty Square toward the Central Market Hall. Lined with historic facades, cafes, boutiques, and Art Nouveau buildings, it has been a fashionable promenade since the nineteenth century. Landmarks along the way include the ornate former Bank Palace and buildings decorated with majolica tiles. At its northern end it opens onto the square with the celebrated Gerbeaud confectionery, a fixture of the city's coffeehouse culture.
