Between 1910 and 1933, reform-minded Berlin set out to house its working people better, and six housing estates from that era show the result. Architects such as Bruno Taut, Martin Wagner and Walter Gropius brought fresh thinking to town planning, architecture and garden design — light, air and colour for those on low incomes — in schemes that influenced housing worldwide. UNESCO inscribed the Berlin Modernism Housing Estates as a World Heritage Site in 2008.
