This monumental war memorial in Treptower Park commemorates Soviet soldiers who died in the Battle of Berlin in 1945 and serves as a military cemetery for thousands of them. Completed in 1949, it culminates in a colossal bronze statue of a soldier cradling a rescued German child while crushing a swastika beneath his boot. A long avenue lined with stone sarcophagi carved with battle scenes leads toward the figure atop a mound. Its scale makes it among the largest of its kind.
