Tempelhofer Feld is a vast open park on the site of Berlin's former Tempelhof Airport, whose runways were closed to aircraft in 2008 and opened to the public soon after. The two long paved strips now serve cyclists, skaters and kite-flyers, while the grasslands between them are managed for ground-nesting birds. The huge curved terminal building along one edge is a listed monument tied to the Berlin Airlift. Community gardens and barbecue areas make it a defining piece of the city's open space.
