Shah-i-Zinda is a necropolis on the northeastern edge of Samarkand consisting of a long lane of mausoleums built between the 11th and 19th centuries. The facades display some of the most accomplished medieval tilework in Central Asia, with luminous blue, turquoise, and white glazed brickwork. The site retains an active religious character, drawing pilgrims as well as visitors drawn to its photogenic layered domes and portal arches.
