A picturesque mosque set on a rise above the old town of Samarkand, near the site of the ancient Afrasiyab settlement. Rebuilt several times over the centuries, its present form dates largely from the nineteenth century and features a carved wooden portico, painted ceilings and a slender minaret overlooking the city. It is dedicated to a figure venerated as a protector of travellers. The elevated terrace offers wide views across Samarkand's domes and toward the surrounding hills.
