The largest and most colourful market in Samarkand sits beside the Bibi-Khanym mosque and has served as a trading place on the old Silk Road for centuries. Beneath its long roofed halls, vendors pile high mountains of dried apricots, raisins, nuts, spices and the round stamped flatbreads for which the city is famous. Stalls also sell fresh produce, sweets, textiles and household goods, and the air is thick with the calls of traders and the scent of melons.
