Few names conjure the Silk Road like Samarkand. Settled as ancient Afrasiab in the 7th century B.C., the city reached its blazing peak under Timur and his heirs in the 14th and 15th centuries, when the tiled ensembles of the Registan, Bibi-Khanum Mosque, Shakhi-Zinda necropolis and Gur-Emir mausoleum arose, alongside Ulugh-Beg's famous observatory. UNESCO inscribed this crossroads of cultures in 2001.
