Niagara-on-the-Lake occupies the northern tip of the Niagara Peninsula where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of a nineteenth-century Ontario town in existence. The main commercial street is lined with heritage buildings dating from the reconstruction following American occupation during the War of 1812. The town serves as the centre of the Niagara wine region, and the Shaw Festival brings professional theatre productions to the town each spring through fall.
