Twenty-odd farmsteads face a broad village green in Holašovice, their curved gables painted in the festive style Czechs call South Bohemian folk Baroque. The layout of this small settlement follows a medieval ground plan, while the buildings themselves date largely from the 18th and 19th centuries — a picture of central European rural life preserved with rare completeness. UNESCO inscribed the village on the World Heritage List in 1998.
