Ceske Budejovice is the historic capital of South Bohemia, laid out in the thirteenth century around one of the largest medieval town squares in the country. The arcaded square is centred on the ornate Samson Fountain and overlooked by the Baroque town hall and the tall Black Tower, which can be climbed for wide views. The city has long been associated with brewing, giving its German name Budweis to a famous style of beer. Its regular grid of streets, gates, and merchant houses reflects careful royal planning.
