Few towns in central Europe kept their medieval fabric as completely as Český Krumlov, folded into a tight loop of the Vltava river beneath a castle begun in the 13th century. Gothic burgher houses, Renaissance gables and Baroque facades crowd the lanes below the castle complex, spared from upheaval by five quiet centuries of gradual evolution. UNESCO placed the historic centre on the World Heritage List in 1992, among the first Czech sites to be honoured.
