One of the most accessible glaciers in the world, Franz Josef descends from the Southern Alps to near sea level through temperate rainforest on the West Coast of South Island. The terminal face sits roughly 300 metres above the valley floor and can be viewed from a marked path in the glacier valley, while helicopter and guided ice walks provide access to the upper névé. The glacier's proximity to the rainforest ecosystem is geographically unusual.
