Located roughly 25 kilometres south of its more famous neighbour Franz Josef, Fox Glacier flows from the Southern Alps and is navigated via valley walks that pass through mixed podocarp and beech forest. The glacier terminal face, visible from the valley floor, has retreated significantly since the mid-twentieth century, with historic marker posts illustrating the rate of recession. Reflections of the glacier in Lake Matheson, a few kilometres away, are a frequently photographed composition.
