The Adelaide Hills rise immediately east of the South Australian capital, forming a horseshoe of hills that shelters the city from summer heat. The region encompasses several distinct wine zones, cool-climate producers working with Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, and historic English-influenced villages such as Hahndorf — the oldest surviving German settlement in Australia, founded in 1839. Mount Lofty Summit, at 710 metres, provides panoramic views across Adelaide to Gulf St Vincent.
